It was a scary scene at Central College on Saturday during the high school portion of their cross country meet. Paramedics had to intervene due to the extreme temperatures which caused some dehydration and other heat-related illnesses. Fortunately, at the end of the day, all of the athletes went home after being checked out at a hospital. As far as results, all of the schools were separated into a large schools and a small schools category. Waukee finished first in the large schools category as a team, with Pella coming in eighth, led by both Katie Canfield and Taryn Ernst who crossed the finish line with a time of 18:13. Courtney Hughs had the fastest time for Knoxville with a finish of 18:22, good for 47th. PCM had the fastest time of any of our local schools on the girls’ side, with Rachel Stafford and Rachel Peter finishing 29th and 30th, respectively with a time of 17:55 and 17:56. Damaris Worthington was the fastest Eagle, clocking in at 20:26. The Pella boys finished second as a team behind Iowa City West; Jordan Pingel led his team with a ninth place finish and a time of 17:43. Knoxville came in ninth as a team, with Preston Lee the front runner at 19:42. PCM came in sixth for small schools as a team; senior Matt Chizek was the fastest Mustang, coming in 15th and a time of just under 20 minutes.
