It took until the second half for any offense to get put on the scoreboard, but after the dust settled, Pella High football came away with a 14 – 7 win over Washington last night. The game was scoreless at the half; the Little Dutch defense gave their offense every opportunity to run away with the game in the first half, but turnovers and penalties killed many of Pella’s deep drives. Daryn Seibelius connected on a 70-yard passing play in the Demons’ first possession of the second half to get them out to an early lead. Noah Clayberg would have something to say about that; after Trevor Argo left the game injured, Clayberg took the game into his own hands, scoring on a 53-yard touchdown keeper and diving into the end zone late in the fourth quarter to give Pella the 14 – 7 advantage. Washington drove down the field with a chance to tie or take the lead, but Clayberg again doused any hopes of a Demon comeback. His batted ball in the end zone on fourth down ended the game and helped the Little Dutch move to 2 – 0 on the season. Pella has a huge match-up at home next week, when one of the top teams in the state in Class 3A, Grinnell, comes into town for the final non-district contest this season.
