The Central College football team made it two straight wins Saturday with a 22-12 victory over Luther. Central broke out of the gate quickly, scoring 12 points in less than 7 minutes thanks to a fumble recovery, a 9-yard Josh Osborn touchdown run, a blocked punt for a safety and a 26-yard Kevin Sheldon field goal. The Dutch defense held the Norse in check for the first twenty minutes of the game, but Luther finally got on the scoreboard with an 81-yard drive midway through the second. Sheldon booted another field goal just before halftime to give Central a 15-6 lead, which was cut to 15-12 when Luther got its second rushing touchdown late in the third quarter. However, Eric Larson, who had a critical field goal block last week, blocked the extra point, preserving Central’s three-point lead. Four minutes later, special teams came up big again for the Dutch, as Drew Carlson recovered a bad punt snap in the end zone for a Central touchdown. Luther never threatened in the fourth after losing its starting quarterback, and the Dutch “D” put the game away. All told, Central blocked three kicks and recovered three Luther fumbles while holding the Iowa Conference’s leading rushing attack to a season-low 208 yards of total offense. Central improves to 4-3 on the season, and evens up its league record at 2-2. They’ll travel to Dubuque to take on last-place Loras next Saturday afternoon on 92.1 KRLS.
