Iowa’s Pheasant season opens today, and with the number of birds in the field well below peak years, reports are that hunters can expect to find the best bird counts in northwest, north central, and central Iowa. Ken Kenyon with the DNR in Marion County says that hunters must wear hats or other headgear with at least 50% orange. Kenyon adds that areas of Marion County are part of more than 7,500 acres of private land in 27 counties being utilized for public hunting through Iowa’s Hunting and Access Program. Areas at Lake Red Rock are also open for upland game bird hunting, but Kenyon says most of it is used for duck, deer, or turkey hunting.
