Late Touchdown Not Enough for Pella Christian

The decision to go for two on a late touchdown proved costly for Pella Christian’s football team, as they fell 14 – 13 to the number six team in Class 1A, Van Meter last night. After stopping the Bulldogs on fourth down in the red zone, the Eagles took the ball 84 yards down the field and scored thanks to a Mason Howerzyl one-yard run to make it 7 – 0. Van Meter would score in the second and third quarters to make it 14 – 7. Following a Coltin Collins intercepted pass, the Eagles’ defense held the Bulldogs to a three-and-out and got the ball back with a little over 2:30 left. Pella Christian advanced the ball to the 40 yard line and Collins found Jake De Ruiter wide open along the far side of the field for a 60-yard touchdown reception to make it 14 – 13. That’s when the Eagles’ seniors decided they wanted to try and win it on the next play. Howerzyl was stopped about 1/3 of a yard shy of the goal line on their two-point conversion attempt to practically end the game. Howerzyl finished with 93 yards and a touchdown, and Collins was 4-for-8 passing for 81 yards and threw for his first touchdown of the season. Pella Christian is now 3 – 4 overall and 1 – 3 in Class 1A District 7. The Eagles almost find themselves in a must-win situation over these final two games if they want to reach the playoffs, and that will start with a home contest against Colfax-Mingo next week.
