The Pella High girls’ basketball team hits their home court tonight against Des Moines North to get down to business for the 2013-14 season. The Lady Dutch were arguably one of the better nine-win teams last year, coming up with wins over ranked teams like Washington and Oskaloosa, and splitting the season series with Grinnell and Norwalk. Coach Jerod Garland says that depth will be an issue early on until his younger athletes step up and show what they can do against actual competition. Garland adds that Des Moines North hasn’t been a great team as of late, but they will be a challenge to begin the season for his girls. Garland mentions that the Polar Bears are a very scrappy, athletic group, and it will be up to his team to handle the pressure Des Moines North will put on them. The JV teams will play first this evening at 6:00 p.m. with the varsity game to follow at 7:30.
