A 32 year old Monroe man has been resentenced to two consecutive 10 year prison terms. In 2012, Joshua Pearson was sentenced in Marion County District Court to two concurrent 10 year terms in prison, after pleading guilty to two counts of sexual abuse in the 3rd degree, for engaging in a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl. Last week, after the Court of Appeals reversed that sentence, District Court Judge Martha Mertz resentenced Pearson, to a term totalling 20 years in prison. Marion County Attorney Ed Bull says, “I wholeheartedly agree with the Court’s decision at the time of resentencing to order the defendant’s sentences to run consecutive.” He goes on to say, “I hope this serves as a reminder to people who are thinking of committing crimes against children, that these cases will be vigorously prosecuted and when appropriate, the State will seek the maximum punishment permitted under the law.”
