Millions of Americans have blood sugar levels that are higher than normal, but aren’t quite high enough to be called diabetes, this is called pre-diabetes. Pella Regional Health Center will be holding pre-diabetes classes on a monthly basis at their medical clinics in Pella, Knoxville and Ottumwa. Health care professionals say that the following are some of the risk factors to watch out for: over 45 years old, family history of diabetes, low physical activity, and high blood pressure. Kathleen Owens, MS, RD, LD, and diabetes dietitian at Pella Regional says that studies have shown that changes in food habits, exercise or weight can all keep blood sugar readings at healthy levels. Classes are $20 and last approximately 90 minutes.
