Strong Second Half Effort Helps Pella Advance

Pella High broke a scoreless tie in the third quarter and hung on to win last night over Williamsburg, 14 – 0 in the second round of the Class 3A football district playoffs. The first half was marred with penalties on the Dutch, forcing them into second and third and long situations that they couldn’t dig out of. The game was scoreless going into half, but Pella changed all of that with a 77-yard drive which culminated in a four-yard touchdown run by Noah Clayberg on third-and-goal to give the Little Dutch an early lead. Noah would also run in another score late in the third from eight yards out, and Pella’s defense would make the score hold the rest of the way. Williamsburg’s best opportunity to get back in the game was following a fumbled punt return which the Raiders recovered inside of Pella territory, but the Little Dutch defense stopped Williamsburg on four straight plays. Coach McKinstrey said that was the “stand” of the game. Clayberg finished 7-of-13 passing for 84 yards and an interception, and also rushed for 114 more. Bryce Bortscheller caught four passes for 62 yards. Pella is now 11 – 0, and are one game away from the UNI-Dome. They will host Washington in a rematch from Week 2 at home this Friday night with a trip to Cedar Falls on the line.
