Grinnell enacted revenge on Knoxville last night in girls basketball by defeating the Panthers 59-48. Knoxville had beaten the Tigers earlier in the season and the Panthers knew they would get a stern test from Grinnell. The Tigers used their inside game and the slashing of Deja Jackson to build a 14 point lead in the second quarter, however Knoxville would cut it to eight at the half and get as close as four early in the fourth quarter before Grinnell pulled away. After a rough start that saw the Panthers trail by ten early, Coach Jim Utiermarkt said the defensive adjustments got his team back in the game. Ashley Hawkshead lead the Panthers with 12 points who fall to 5-9 on the season and 2-6 in the conference. The boys gave Grinnell everything they had but still fell 60-50 last night. The Panthers never let Grinnell get away and actually took the lead with 5:08 remaining in the game when Chase Larson nailed a three to make it 48-47. But Grinnell closed the game on a 13-2 run. Chase Higgenbotham scored ten points for the Panthers who fall to 4-9e on the season and 2-6 in conference play. Both Panther squads will play in tonight’s Coaches vs. Cancer game against Chariton.
