Knoxville Recreation Center Director Brandon Nemmers tells KNIA KRLS News that the Rec Center has about 1200 members currently, not including daily admission patrons. He says that number has jumped by about 400 people in the last few years, and the center is maxed out on class times, gym availability and space. Nemmers says an architect assessment shows more space is needed, and public input sessions in 2013 showed the desire for that as well.

Nemmers says the expansion proposal is on the docket for the City Council’s prioritization meetings, and he plans to propose changes to the fitness area, locker room renovation, HVAC to the gym and constructing an outdoor splash pad, among other items.
