Both of Pella High’s basketball teams finished their first trip through the Little Hawkeye Conference with a 5 – 2 record after defeating Newton in a sweep on Friday night. The Lady Dutch won 56 – 47, but the score shouldn’t have been that close. Pella was up 42 – 21 midway through the third until Newton went on a huge run thanks to some stingy man-to-man defense. Jessica Holterhaus had 14 points and Mackenzie Gustafson scored 13 to lead the way for the Lady Dutch. The Little Dutch used a strong second half effort to blowout the Cardinals, 74 – 49. Bryce Bortscheller lit it up from the field, shooting 7-for-8 including five three-pointers to dump in 20 points. Coach Mark Core said after the game that both Pella High teams are in a nice groove at the moment. The Lady Dutch are 8 – 4 overall while the Pella boys improve to 9 – 2. Each team will step away from league play this evening; PCM awaits the Dutch for a doubleheader.
