Just after noon Tuesday, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from the Sully Truck Wash on Highway F 62. The caller, an employee of the business reported that three other employees were passed out inside a tank trailer. Fred Scaletta, Executive Officer for the Iowa Department of Corrections tells KNIA/KRLS News that two inmates employed at the business were exposed to hazardous materials. Scaletta adds that one inmate is currently under observation, and will recover, while the other passed away after receiving medical attention. Due to the suspected hazardous materials incident and the number of patients, several agencies responded to the call including Sully, Lynnville, Kellogg and Monroe Fire Departments, Newton Fire and Haz Mat, LifeFlight and Mercy helicopters, along with the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office. The cause or type of material inside the tank being cleaned is still under investigation by the Sully Fire Department, and names of employees are being withheld pending completion of the investigation.
