Protecting Your Investment in Livestock

Dr. Tim Yoder from the Tri County Veterinary Clinic in Pella tells KNIA/KRLS that although some tools of the livestock trade, such as portable calf warmers, can be harder to find this time of year, there are plenty of ways to replicate those products on site. He says that it’s easy to build an insulated box out of plywood, cut holes in it and place a heat lamp above it to warm the calf. He adds that really the key is to be prepared ahead of time so that you have all the resources you’ll need readily available, and then when the calves start being born, you are ready to focus on the animal. He concludes by saying that raising livestock is an investment, and the more you put into it, and the better prepared you are, the better the results are going to be.
