State Supplemental Aid is on the minds of House Republicans this legislative term, and Greg Heartsill, Representative for District 28, says they are asking for a change to the law. Currently, the house is required to set supplemental aid for the two upcoming fiscal years within the first 30 days after the governor’s budget is received. He says in the past, this has caused problems when, after setting the numbers, the revenue was not available. He says this put schools in a bind, because then their budgets had to be completely redone. He says Republicans are simply asking for the law to change, so they can set next fiscal year’s aid number in the first 30 days, then before the legislature adjourns, set the next year’s aid. At this point he is not confident that the Senate will agree; but he says it is the right thing to do, and hopes the change is made.
