Eleven innings and some late heroics by Central’s offense and defense helped the Dutch salvage a split with Dubuque on Sunday. The Dutch dropped the opener, 2 – 1, but came back late in the nightcap to win 3 – 2 in 11 innings over the Spartans. Freshman Zach Brown drove in the tying run in the top of the eighth, and then Andrew O’Toole threw out the game-winning run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extras. After allowing three suicide-squeeze bunts for runs in Saturday’s doubleheader, Central gave Dubuque a taste of their own medicine in the 11th inning with their own squeeze play which scored Spencer Gritsch and Central hung on to win 3 – 2. The Dutch are now 9 – 6 overall and 1 – 3 in league play. The Dutch will host Simpson College next on Tuesday.
