Iowa Flag Day is this Saturday, and Knoxville will hold a celebration in front of the Knoxville Public Library and the Dixie Gebhardt House. Dixie Gebhardt designed the flag and it was officially adopted as the state flag in 1921. Representative Greg Heartsill says there is a portrait of Gebhardt above Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds’ desk, and he says when students visit, he likes to give them a tour of the office and surprise them with a pop quiz to see if they know who she is and what she did for Iowa history. He says most times they know she is Iowa’s version of Betsy Ross, or they know she was from Knoxville, but he says it’s important for them to know this part of Iowa’s history.
