State champions are crowned. Dreams and goals achieved and shattered. The Iowa State High School Track and Field meet brings the best-of-the-best to one blue stage with several medals and trophies on the line. The Pella High boys’ track and field team won the team title in dramatic fashion in the last race of the meet, by one point over rival Knoxville. This year, Knoxville will compete in five events, with Pella in 10. The Class 2A and 3A girls’ meet will have the spotlight on PCM and Pella High, as each school qualified double digit events and have a strong chance of coming away with some sort of hardware and banner by the end of the day on Saturday. Pella Christian’s girls will compete in a quartet of events as well, hoping to find their way onto the medal stand. Melcher-Dallas’ own, Chase Wetterling, will also run in the 100 and 400 meter dashes. For Pleasantville, five events made it, with Patrick Sheehey running the 100 meter dash, competing in the long and high jumps. Little Dutch head coach, Brent Van Hauen, says competing in a tough state qualifying meet for the second straight year will help his experienced varsity athletes be prepared for what this year’s championship brings. Eagles’ girls’ coach, Kevin Herdegen says that the girls that competed at the Drake Relays about a month ago may have lit a fire of desire in the rest of the team.
