Despite a two-and-out performance at this weekend’s Iowa Conference softball tournament, Central College was rewarded with one of 19 at-large bids Monday morning into the 62-team NCAA Division III tournament. The Dutch will host a four-team regional this Friday through Sunday that also includes Luther, Washington University of Saint Louis and North Central of Illinois. Central head coach George Wares has been through the ringer before, but he says it’s never easy to have to sit and wait for your fate to be announced. If history is any indication, it could be a good weekend for the Dutch. Central laid an egg at last year’s conference tournament in Cedar Rapids as well, only to regroup and sweep through the regionals in Pella the following weekend. The Dutch open regionals this Friday against North Central, while Luther will play Wash U. Central’s game with North Central is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start. We’ll have all of the Central College games live this weekend with Trevor Castle providing the play-by-play on 92.1 KRLS and www.kniakrls.com.
