Needing a series win to clinch a first-round bye in the Iowa Conference tournament next week, the Central baseball team split their first doubleheader with Wartburg yesterday. Game one was a masterpiece by pitcher, Judson McKown. He shutout the Knights on just two hits in seven innings of work in a 1 – 0 Central victory. A one-out double from Andrew O’Toole, followed by an RBI single from Robbie Rushing gave McKown and the Dutch all the cushion they would need. Unfortunately, Central could not keep it going in the nightcap, falling 5 – 2. Wartburg clobbered two home runs, one of them a three-run shot in the sixth, to help them to the win. Central is now 24 – 13 overall and 16 – 10 in league play. The Dutch must sweep Wartburg this afternoon to receive that round one bye in next week’s league tournament. The first pitch of today’s doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in Pella.
