Runs were not at a premium in Newton last night, as both the Cardinals’ and Pella Christian softball teams split a Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader. The Eagles relinquished a 10 – 2 lead and had to score three in the top of the seventh of game one to win 13 – 12 over the home team. Newton used a six-run fourth inning which saw them bat around to help them win game two, 13 – 8. The young Eagles had to come back twice in that second game and even in the first game, and Coach Karen Harrill says that has been a theme so far this year. Natalie Huisman went 3-for-4 at the plate in game two, with a pair of singles, a home run and four RBI’s. The Eagles are 5 – 2 overall and 1 – 2 in league play. They’ll take part in the Oskaloosa tournament later today.
