The Community Eligibility Provision of the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs is a new option that ensures children in high-poverty neighborhoods have access to healthy meals at school. Some families who claim the Earned Income Credit or Child Tax Credit may be able to qualify in Community Eligibility. School districts must decide by June 30 if they will offer community eligibility, and Diane Ellis, Assistant Director with Marion County Public Health says that 4 schools in Marion County have been identified that may qualify: West and Northstar in Knoxville, Melcher-Dallas, and Twin Cedars. Contact Becca Segal, Child Nutrition Associate with the Center’s Food Assistance team, for questions and more information about implementing community eligibility, rsegal@cbpp.org.
