A Knoxville couple heading to Indianola to attend the Indianola Balloon Classic were seriously injured in a vehicle accident Sunday night.

Nola Vasquez 57, and Gene Luebbert 64, were westbound on Highway 92 on a motorcycle when they were struck by a eastbound truck near Shady Oaks Golf Course. According to the Iowa State Patrol, the driver of the 1972 Chevrolet pickup, William Todd 61, of Indianola failed to notice that traffic had stopped in front of him in his lane. When he finally noticed traffic had stopped, he slammed on his brakes, which locked up. Todd then lost control of the vehicle, which spun around and entered the westbound lane, striking the motorcycle.

Todd was uninjured, and was charged with failure to stop within the assured cleared distance. Vasquez is in stable condition at Mercy in Des Moines, Luebbert is in critical condition at Methodist.
