The Knoxville Police Department is warning area businesses and anyone that takes cash to be aware of counterfeit bills. Chief Dan Losada says over the last week or 10 days his department has received several reports of counterfeit $20, $50, and $100 bills being passed. He says if you find you have received a counterfeit, call the police, and they will take a report and take the bill. Unfortunately, Chief Losada says, there isn’t any recourse for those who receive the fake money, if the one who passed it can’t be located. He says to protect yourself, look for the safety features on the bills, which include holograms, watermarks, reflective strips – and he says there are markers available that react with the linen in the bill and show whether it’s real or not.
