They are the Heart of Iowa Conference champs, the PCM softball team beat Colfax-Mingo to clinch the league title last night, 5 – 3. Racheal Freland struck out 11 on the mound, while Krystal Pendroy and Jen Uitermarkt each were 2-for-3 at the plate. The Mustangs finish the regular season 20 – 7, and they take on Davis County tonight in the first round of the Class 3A regional tournament at 7:00 p.m. On the baseball diamond, a late PCM rally came up just short in a 3 – 2 loss to Class 3A Saydel. The Eagles scored one run in each of the first three innings before the Mustangs scored two in the sixth, but couldn’t push the tying run across. Zach Uhlenhopp and Chase Keuning each had two hits for PCM. Dillon Bruxvoort took the hard-luck loss on the rubber, throwing six innings of four hit ball, allowing three runs, only one of them earned, and striking out nine. PCM falls to 11 – 12 and they’ll play Pella tonight.
