A Des Moines man was arrested and charged with multiple offenses after a police pursuit on Highway 163 started near Pella late Saturday.

After 9:00 pm, Pella Police were searching for a suspicious vehicle on Highway 163, when officers noticed a vehicle with invalid registration plates.  After they attempted to stop the vehicle, however, police say the operator drove away at a high rate-of-speed eastbound into Mahaska County. The suspect’s vehicle was stopped at the Highway 163 and Highway 92 interchange in Oskaloosa after members of the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office successfully deployed tire deflation devices.  The suspect exited the vehicle and was apprehended after a short foot chase.  Police determined that a 13 year old child was in the vehicle with the defendant during the pursuit, who was uninjured. Thirty three year old Ryan Matthew Bennett of Des Moines was arrested and charged with Neglect of Dependent Person, which is a Class C Felony, Eluding, Driving While Barred, and Reckless Driving, as well as other simple misdemeanors. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office also assisted in the chase. KNIA/KRLS News will have more details as they become official.
