It wasn’t pretty at times, but the Pella High volleyball team did away with Ballard in five sets in last night’s 2014 season opener. After winning game one 25 – 19, the Lady Dutch had game point three straight serves but couldn’t close the deal, falling 26 – 24. Game three went Pella’s way, 25 – 21 before the action really started to heat up. The Bombers had the Lady Dutch down 18 – 5 in set four, before the green jerseys started to rally. Pella forced essentially “volleyball overtime” before Ballard prevailed 28 – 26. The Lady Dutch had to claw back in the deciding game, but got the job done, 15 – 11. Pella committed 19 service errors on the night, and Coach Catie Brand said she was just happy they ended up on the winning side of things. Kiara Bradley had 13 kills and four aces serves, while Makenna Bogaard led the team in kills with 15, Jessica Holterhaus also threw in 11 of her own. Pella is 1 – 0 to begin the year and they’ll take part in the Bondurant-Farrar tournament tomorrow.
