A swimming advisory notice is posted at two beaches at Lake Red Rock due to blue-green algae. They are posted at North Overlook Beach and Whitebreast Beach at Lake Red Rock in response to the presence of a significant bloom. In addition to the two beaches, algae has also been observed in the main basin of the lake. The algae has the potential to impact the health of humans and their pets. The bloom can produce a toxic compound known as microcystin, which can cause illness through direct skin contact, by ingesting the water, or by breathing airborne droplets of the water. Microcystin poisoning can cause skin reactions, stomach or intestinal pain, breathing problems or liver damage. The Corps of Engineers will continue to monitor the water quality of these swim areas and the main body of the lake through routine water sampling. Samples taken earlier this week were well below levels of concern. They advise the public to stay away from water that is covered with scum, is bright green or blue in color, or has a bad odor. If you come in contact with water where a blue-green algae bloom has formed, wash off with fresh water and soap and contact your healthcare provider if you experience any symptoms.
