It’s nearly been 153 years since a Knoxville soldier in the Union Army was killed in an ambush.

Captain Josiah Woodruff of Knoxville was a Special Agent to the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division. Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War’s Ron Deal says Woodruff and his partner, Centerville native Captain John Bashore, were killed when they were ambushed by a group of draft dodgers they were sent to apprehend on October 1st, 1861.

Woodruff is buried in Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville.

A dedication ceremony will held at his gravesite on Saturday, October 4th, beginning at 2pm. The public is invited to attend.
