Knoxville Fire Chief Jim Mitchell says his department will be visiting with students next week as part of Fire Prevention Week.

Mitchell says it’s a great way to show children what a firefighter looks like so they can recognize them as someone who will save them if they’re ever caught in a fire. He says many children caught in a fire can be frightened of firefighters because they look like scary creatures and showing children how they dress and what they sound like can help eliminate those fears.

The Knoxville Fire Department is asking for donations to help fund the packets they give to students during Fire Prevention Week. Donations can be sent to Knoxville City Hall to the Knoxville Fire Prevention Fund or dropped off at Knoxville Fire Department.
