It was a party for a town divided.
Iowa and Iowa State fans gathered in downtown Knoxville Wednesday to be part of the RVTV Cy-Hawk Tailgate event. Food, games, and team spirit took center stage as the City of Knoxville was again put on display.
Events included a dunk tank, tug-of-war, square dancing, and more, with music and cheer-leading provided by Knoxville high school. The KNIA/KRLS Big Red Radio also participated in the event. It’s estimated over 2,000 people came out for the tailgate party.
While fans came to support their part of the rivalry, they also enjoyed the comradery and getting to see the community meet as one.
Chamber Vice President Annie Leonard says it reminded some people of community gatherings from the past.
And while this is the final year of RVTV traveling across the state, continuing the party before the Cy-Hawk’s game in Knoxville maybe a possibility in the years to come.
