A local non-profit retail outfit that promotes fair trade is celebrating a special anniversary this week.

The Work of Our Hands will have special programs as a part of their 25th anniversary. General Manager Cheryl Newendorp says their store partners with economically disadvantaged people by helping them learn to support themselves and their families through fair trade.

One of the main events will take place at 7 p.m. Oct. 22, when a panel of speakers will discuss fair trade and social sustainability in Maytag Student Center’s van Emmerik Studio. On the panel, Norm will be joined by international fair-trade professional Kerry Evans, professor of political science Jim Zaffiro and The Work of Our Hands manager Cheryl Newendorp.

On Oct. 23, a four-course Cambodian dinner and wine pairing will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Graham Conference Center, where Norm will also present on fair trade issues. Guests must R.S.V.P. to Central Dining Services at 641-628-5201. The cost is $30 per adult, $25 for Central students over age 21 with a meal plan, and $10 for students under 21 with a meal plan.

In the Maytag Student Center Atrium, The Work of Our Hands will also run a booth from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Oct. 21–24, where students and guests can buy crafts made by artisans in developing countries.
