The Pella Garden Club, Historic Pella Trust, the American Legion and Hearthstone are teaming up to bring back garden that stood as a sign of thanks from the Netherlands.
David Goos with WesleyLife says the original Fair Haven Memorial garden stood at the Fair Haven property as a gift from Holland after the Pella community’s support while the Dutch were occupied by Nazi Germany during World War II. A committee is working to restore the area, and more 12,000 tulip bulbs have been ordered and the garden has been laid out. Two granite memorial stones will be engraved on both sides with the names of the more than 800 local veterans who served in World War II. They hope to have the new garden ready by the 80th Tulip Time and 70th Anniversary of World War II in Spring of 2015.
Those wishing to donate should make checks payable to Fair Haven Memorial Garden Project. They can be mailed to The Pella Garden Club, P.O. Box 164, Pella, Iowa 50219.
