A Pella man charged with three felonies involving sex acts with minors has been sentenced.

Twenty-year old Nyran Chohan was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Friday after he pleaded guilty to one count of sexual abuse in the third degree and two counts of lascivious acts with a child in August. Marion County Attorney Ed Bull tells KNIA/KRLS News that Chohan was ordered to be on lifetime parole after he is released from prison and he has to complete sex offender treatment while incarcerated. He says since Chohan is not a US Citizen, he is subject to deportation upon completion of his sentence. He was arrested in March of this year after a series of events spanning eight months, and he was accused of having sexual contact with minors under the age of 15.

Bull says, “First and foremost I wish to commend the victims for having the courage to come forward. Second, I wish to thank the Pella Police Department, and specifically Officer Shawn Veenstra for his work on this case. Third, I want to note, that this case is a staunch reminder that all sex offenders don’t look alike. Sometimes we think that predators look a certain way or they act a certain way, that isn’t true. This case proves that fact. You never would have thought this defendant was targeting our youth. And based on the facts as I know them, the only reason there were not more victims was due to the courage of the victims to speak up and for law enforcement to actively investigate the crime. ”
