That stop on fourth down, as heard on 92.1 KRLS, ended last night’s Class 3A state quarterfinal match-up between Pella High and Washington as the Dutch football team downed the Demons, 31 – 14, to send them back to the UNI-Dome and the semifinals for the first time since 2010. Washington scored first after getting the ball back following a muffed punt, but the Dutch would not be denied, as they lit the scoreboard up the next three times down the field, all capped off by a 67 yard touchdown run by Quinton Murphy. After Washington scored to get it back to a one-possession game with less than a minute to go in the half, the Little Dutch drove down and scored with less than a second left on the clock. Seth Johnson capped off the scoring on the night with a long 45 yard field goal to put the game out of reach. Despite uncharacteristically turning the ball over three times on the night, Coach Jay McKinstrey says his guys did a great job of staying focused and getting the victory. Pella’s “Big Three” all finished with over 100 yards on the ground; Nathan Henry had 143 yards, Murphy had 121, and Noah Clayberg finished with 115. Pella is now 12 – 0 on the season and they’ll play Cedar Rapids Xavier in the semifinal round at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls this Thursday at 8:21 p.m., in a game that will be live on 92.1 KRLS and KNIAKRLS.com.
