Thanksgiving has often been one of the busiest travel holidays of the year with many people driving to visit family and friends.

Marion County Sheriff Jason Sandholdt says it’s always a good idea to plan your route. He says it’s good to communicate the route with those you’re visiting. This way, if something happens along the way, the people you’re visiting can give emergency personnel a general idea of where you might be located.

Sandholdt also advises travelers to dress appropriately for the weather, pack a few extra items, like blankets and extra coats in case you become stuck in your vehicle, and make sure you have a charged cellphone to communicate with emergency officials.
