Fire crews braved freezing temperatures to fight a blaze northeast of Pella late Sunday night into early this morning.

The Pella Rural Fire Department responded to the home at 275 240th Place approximately 6 miles northeast of downtown. Pella Fire Chief Doug Van Gorkum tells KNIA/KRLS news that the fire started after 11 p.m., in a wood-burning stove in the basement of the home, and spread to some of the bedrooms and to the roof. He says it took crews nearly 4 hours to finish at the scene as they searched for hotspots in wind chills well below zero. The residents were home at the time and were able to escape with no injuries.
