Fire crews braved freezing temperatures to fight a blaze northeast of Pella into the early morning hours on Monday.

The Pella Rural Fire Department responded to the home late Sunday night at 275 240th Place, approximately 6 miles northeast of downtown Pella. Pella Fire Chief Doug Van Gorkum tells KNIA/KRLS news that the home has extensive damage after a fire started in a wood-burning stove in the basement of the home, and spread to some of the bedrooms and to the roof. He says it took crews nearly 4 hours to finish at the scene as they searched for hotspots in wind chills well below zero. Those who were inside at the time of the fire were able to escape and were not injured.
