Even with all of the question marks surrounding the team coming into this season, the Pella Christian girls’ basketball squad is performing well through the first third of their schedule. The Eagles are 5 – 1, and have been stepping it up on defense, allowing 26 points to Oskaloosa last week and held Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont to two points in the first quarter on Monday. Coach Kevin Van Maanen says he still would like to see a better effort on the defensive side of the ball. Rebounding has been a problem for the Eagles early on. They are averaging under 20 boards per game, which is one of the lowest totals in Class 2A. The Eagles have a big test ahead of them on Friday, when they host Pella High for a conference doubleheader.
