It was the road team that prevailed at Pella Christian High School last night in the first of two acts of the Tulip City Rivalry between the Eagles and Pella High. Both games were live on 92.1 KRLS. The Lady Dutch got out to a 24 – 7 first quarter advantage and cruised to a 59 – 39 win. Katie Vander Molen scored 14 of her game-high 17 points in the first half, while Autumn Vos led the Eagles in scoring with 12. Lady Dutch head coach, Jerod Garland, says that it was a great way to finish before the extended break. Pella High’s girls are now 6 – 2 overall and a perfect 3 – 0 in the conference, while Pella Christian drops to 5 – 2 and 1 – 2, respectively. The boys’ game was expected to be an NBA-style shootout, and did not disappoint, as the Little Dutch grabbed the lead midway through the first period and never trailed the rest of the way, winning 87 – 74. Isaac Naaktgeboren was unstoppable once again, scoring 25 points, 19 in the first half, and pulled down nine rebounds. Eagles’ coach, Larry Hessing, says his team just wasn’t able to slow down Pella when they needed to. David Kacmarynski lead the Eagles with 20 points and ten boards. Pella’s boys are now 5 – 2 and 1 – 2 in league play. Pella Christian drops to 5 – 1 and 2 – 1. The teams are off for the holiday break until January 5.
