There is a rule for high school boys’ basketball in the state of Iowa that if sports seasons overlap one another, i.e. the end of football season into the start of practices for basketball, the latter of the two is allowed to have a certain number of practices before their first game. Pella High’s football team winning the Class 3A state championship in late November gave the Little Dutch hoopsters an opportunity to push things back by a few days, including their first game of the season. Coach Mark Core and his players chose to waive that right and delve right into their campaign. Core says his team has adjusted nicely so far facing a fairly difficult early-season schedule. After their holiday pit stop, Pella’s road continues on after Ankeny Christian Academy on the 5th of January with conference games against Norwalk, Newton, and Oskaloosa. The Little Dutch are 5 – 2 overall and 1 – 2 in league play.
