Scoring was at a premium up in Waverly last night for both Central and Wartburg basketball. The Dutch women dug a big first half hole they couldn’t climb out of and fell, 66 – 42. Central scored just 12 first half points on 4-of-22 shooting. In fact, the Dutch were stuck on ten points for 9:27 before Alison Malaby made a lay-up with 15 seconds left in the half. Lauren Sharp led Central in scoring with ten points. The Central men flexed their defensive muscle to overpower the Knights, 67 – 59. Wartburg was held to just 22 points after 20 minutes of play, despite getting out to a 16 – 7 lead early. The Dutch responded with an 11 – 0 run to grab the advantage. Nile Eckermann led all scorers with 23 points, Kyle Newendorp had 22, and Colby Taylor grabbed 15 rebounds in the win. The loss drops Central’s women to 9 – 5 on the year and 0 – 3 in the Iowa Conference. The men improve to 9 – 5, and have created a five-way tie for first place between themselves, Dubuque, Buena Vista, Coe, and the Knights at 2 – 1 in the league. Central is on the road next on Saturday for a doubleheader at Loras, which will be broadcast live on 92.1 KRLS and KNIAKRLS.com.
