An emotional night of honor and celebration could turn record breaking.

Final totals for the 2015 Knoxville Coaches vs Cancer campaign are not yet in, but it was a packed house at Knoxville High School Saturday for the girls’ and boys’ basketball games against Chariton, along with all the events held throughout the day. Between games, groups that raised funds for the campaign were thanked for their contributions. Four cancer survivors were also honored and shared their stories of courage and hope.

Over $24,000 was earned by Knoxville Coaches vs Cancer going into the evening and they received an added boost when the Knoxville Cancer Relay team announced they earned more than $17,000 for their run across Iowa in October. The group of ten runners kept their total secret until it was announced between games.
Coach Jim Uitermarkt added they still have to add the totals from the alumni games played earlier in the day as well as the silent auction items and concessions that were available to patrons. Uitermarkt says he’s thankful to all who’ve helped with the campaign, especially his wife Angie, and for a community that continues to step up year after year for such a worthy cause.
They hope to eclipse last year’s total of nearly $59,000 and increase their overall fundraising total to date to more than a quarter of a million dollars. Unofficial totals announced following the boys’ game said they collected over $60,000.
Proceeds go to the American Cancer Society. Knoxville’s Coaches vs Cancer campaign has had the highest total in nation the past two consecutive years.
