As the Vice-Chairman of the Government Oversight Committee in the Iowa Legislature, District 28 Representative Greg Heartsill has taken part in the investigation of the delayed Fort Madison prison.

Heartsill recently took a tour of the facility and says he saw first-hand why upgrades are needed. He says issues with the geothermal system have been a key in delaying the opening of the facility.
Funding to build a new prison in Fort Madison was approved in 2008 and it was expected to open no later than 2013.
Now, Heartsill says the facility is expected to open sometime this summer.
