A group of four Pella High School seniors have spent their winters together in Room 116, preparing for performances worthy of the highest honors in the state.
The Reader’s Theatre group consisting of Colin Jones, Eleanor Witt, Devin McCain, and Kody Beller have formed a cohesive unit on and off stage to earn four consecutive All-State speech honors. Witt says this group was originally thrown together at the last minute.
“If anyone had looked at us freshman year I don’t think that anyone could have guessed that we would be four year all-staters and performing twice,” Witt says. Because we were this bunch of kids that was thrown together randomly…but I think it worked out.”
Beller says what’s helped them the most is the friendship they’ve been able to form, and the many hours they don’t spend rehearsing when they’re together after school.
“We sit down, we talk about our normal lives, and we help each other out through our problems,” he says. “We then practice for about ten minutes, find something to eat, and then talk again for another half an hour about our social problems and help each other out. That’s how we’ve really bonded in the past four years.”
The “Dream Team,” as they’ve coined themselves, were invited to the stage for the second year in a row.
They will be joined by the Knoxville improv team “Barkley” for performances. Pella Christian’s one act play and Pella’s musical theatre group earned non-performing All-State recognition.
