A trio of Pella High seniors will carry the “student-athlete” moniker into their collegiate careers. Marcus Wittmer will be playing baseball for Northland Community and Technical College up in Thief River Falls, Minnesota. They are a Division III NJCAA school. Wittmer batted .389 last season with 12 doubles and 27 RBI’s, as the Little Dutch made it to the substate final last summer. Playing baseball and career aspirations of being a police officer made Wittmer’s decision an easy one. Quinton Murphy, a member of the 2014 Class 3A state football champion Dutch squad, signed with Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge. They, too, are an NJCAA school, and Murphy hopes to eventually play Division I football somewhere. Murphy had 84 rushes for 871 yards and 16 touchdowns during a 14 – 0 undefeated season in the fall. Garret Jansen will be playing football at the University of Iowa this fall after signing yesterday inside the Pella High School library. Jansen had been committed to three different schools, including Cincinnati and Northern Iowa, but says it’s a sigh of relief to have actually put the pen to the paper. He adds that his career path also played a vital role in his choosing of wearing the black and gold. Little Dutch head football coach, Jay McKinstrey, says Jansen’s hard work helped him realize his dreams. Jansen, in his senior year, led his squad with 59.5 tackles, 20 of them for a loss, and five sacks.
