A late rally allowed the Central baseball team to earn a win in the first game of their Iowa Conference opening series against Wartburg yesterday. The Dutch and Knights were tied at two going into the seventh, when Kirby Coppess was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, followed by a single and a walk to load the bases. Catcher Michael Reuter came up with a big sac fly to drive in what ended up being the game-winning run of a 3 – 2 final. Andy Carr was lights out for Central, pitching a complete game and giving up only four hits and one earned run in his seven innings of work. Central got out to a 3 – 0 lead against Wartburg in the nightcap, but fell, 5 – 3. The Dutch were done in by three defensive errors which all ended up being costly. Spencer Gritsch was 2-for-4 in the nightcap, as Central’s record now stands at 5 – 8, and they are 1 – 1 in league play. They’ll conclude their series with Wartburg with another doubleheader in Waverly today starting at 1:00. You can hear the call of both games live on 92.1 KRLS and KNIAKRLS.com with Cory Houser and Andrew Schneider on the play-by-play. Pre-game will begin at 12:45.
