On a rain soaked afternoon in Tucson, Arizona, the Central softball team emerged victorious over Mayville State yesterday, 9 – 7. The Dutch got out to a quick 6 – 0 lead after two innings thanks to a Kaitlyn Matzen three-run homer in the first and a two-run double from Whitney Sowers in the second. Matzen finished 3-for-4 at the plate. Trisha Smith earned the win on the mound, throwing five-and-a-third innings and allowing four earned runs on five hits, a walk, and three strikeouts. Central’s game with Dickinson State was cancelled due to the rain. The Dutch improve to 9 – 4 on the year and they play a doubleheader with Wisconsin – La Crosse and Puget Sound today.
