Melcher-Dallas girls’ basketball coach, Jon Suntken, had the unenviable task of looking at his bench in late, close-game situations and seeing only a couple of athletes ready to go in. Numbers lacked for the Saints this year, but it did not stop them from fighting each time they stepped foot on the court. The first game of the season against Wayne was a table-setter for what was to come the rest of the way. The Saints were up by a few points in the fourth quarter, but had two girls foul out of the contest, leaving just three to play against five Falcons. However, Melcher-Dallas was able to “kill the 5-on-3 power play,” so to speak, and prevail, 33 – 28. Suntken says it was basically the story of their entire season, which he says made it one of the most fun years he’s had coaching. The Saints finished the season with a mark of 8 – 14.
