Down by 19 at one point early in the second half, the Pella High boys’ basketball team saw their 19-game winning streak and season both come to an end at the hands of Cedar Rapids Xavier last night, 65 – 61, in the first round of the Class 3A state tournament. Turnovers killed the Dutch, committing 12 in the first half while mustering only 19 points on the scoreboard. Pella had four more giveaways in the first three minutes of the third quarter, which led to a 40 – 21 Saint advantage, before the Dutch put their final surge together, ending the period with an 18 – 4 run to close the gap to five. Pella had several opportunities down by one and two points with the ball, but could not get a shot to drop when they needed to. Isaac Naaktgeboren finished with 19 points, and Ryan Van Wyk added 16, as Pella finishes the year with a 21 – 3 record. They lose five seniors from the varsity squad.
